HW for Tuesday, 9/4

We won't usually have class on Wednesday -- tomorrow is special!  We're going to watch a famous movie that is inspired by a famous myth.  To prepare, please read the short handout I gave you in class: "Pygmalion."  We'll discuss it before we start the movie on Wednesday.

Welcome!

In this class, we’ll set out to become more culturally literate – that is, to have “a grasp of background information that writers assume their audience already has” (E.D. Hirsch, Jr). We’ll figure out why someone might warn you not to cut your long hair, and what it means to call something a “Cinderella story.”  You may discover what to be (or not to be), and become acquainted with the man who made some people so afraid of showers and flocks of birds.  We’ll read (and write!) novels, short stories, plays, essays and poetry, as well as listen to music and study some visual arts.  We’ll discuss what makes these stories and ideas so lasting, and apply what we learn to our own writing.  (1 English credit).

Use this blog! I will post hw assignments here, and will occasionally ask you to respond to posts online.
